The gift of freedom is a trojan horse in this case. End the occupation of Iraq.

Tower By Michael Lee Poy With Music By Javier Hernandez-Miyares For Marks Of The Soul Exhibit At Florida Atlantic University 2001 Curated By Barbaro Martinez Ruiz

Repique For Marks Of The Soul (Javier Hernandez-Miyares)

From a distance the tower is a beacon. It locates a place and a space and calls the community to it’s surroundings. In the Boca Raton area, Florida Atlantic University holds a pre-eminent place as the center for higher learning…The tower is the main entrance to two vital gathering spaces – the lecture hall and the main art gallery…These elements create a locus – a place and a stage for gathering…Essentially it is a mini piazza – a nexus. The backdrop of architectural elements creates the structure for an event to revolve around its core. As an entrance, it is the beginning of the architectural narrative and the initiation of the story of the building – once upon a time and you begin the discovery of the space. In religious iconography and procession, the ceremony begins when a sacrifice is made and a gesture offered. In other words when one enters the spritual space and place of gathering, the event is activated…The gathering place of the tower is the moment where the architectonics of the altar will be intensified…New music designed by Javier Hernandez-Miyares for the semi-hour bell ritual will complement, remind and call the visiting participants to the traditions existent in Afro-Carribean gatherings. (Excerpts from “Tower – boundaries, banners and bells” by Michael Lee Poy)
