Lyrics to Safe As Milk by Javier Hernandez-Miyares (Fee Fi Fo Fum)
gonna sing, gonna sing my song
my song of celebration
cause when the pied piper comes again
he’s going take us to the same location
where all the little children, found the tree of knowledge
in the garden
garden of temptation
you see there was this tree in the forest
and it fell down one day
there was no one there to see it
but they heard it just the same
and they all knew
they would never be innocent again
and they were safe
safe as milk
safe as their mother’s milk
they were safe
safe as milk
overworked and underpaid
but safe
safe as milk
suddenly there came a flood
and it washed away the cities
every man, woman and child
they were caught sleeping
and every man and his opinion
was washed into the sea
drowned in the sea
then we crawled out of the water
and we climbed up in the trees
and when we looked at each other
we saw that we were monkeys
and every trace we left behind
became a part of history
history
and we were safe
safe as milk
safe as our mothers milk
we were safe
safe as milk
overworked and underpaid
but safe
safe as milk
so we rebuilt our cities
and our institutions
and since nothing was heaven sent
the branches of the government
were the only things that grew
on our tree of history
history
gonna sing gonna sing my song
my song of celebration
cause when the pied piper comes again
i’m going to take him to the same location
where all the little children
found the tree of knowledge
in the garden
garden of temptation
we were as safe as milk…

Poem written as a clue to the meaning of “safe as milk”
We were seeking God
In the beginning
but it was too perfect
to perfect to be seen
so we remade god in our own image
as a mortal to be seen
deified
(It)
it that feels birth pangs
and dies in childbirth
and leaves us orphans
longing for it
imagining it
It
always coming and leaving
like our breath
as in our sexual embrace
as we see
It

i think it’s quite beautiful. another reference to eden. you’re right about it being a hymn to the sorrow and joy of life. it’s comforting in a way, but there’s a foreshadowing of danger. i’m not sure if that makes sense. I like the poem as well. a question: “it” refers to…? anywho. thanks for posting the lyrics.
